Understanding The Importance Of Small Details In Interior Design

By Vickie Daeley

There are many big elements that are important to think about when you are redecorating a room in your house. Selecting and arranging furnishings, for example, is highly important, as is the color of the walls and the lighting. But sometimes, it’s the little elements that really make a room sparkle. So before you declare the design complete, consider the following tidbits.

The color of your doors, cabinets and large furniture pieces, such as a china cabinet, is certainly important. However, to make a door or drawer a bit more interesting, it is a good idea to invest in some beautiful hardware. The wrong hardware can alter the look of your kitchen, bedroom or bath, but the right selection makes a big difference. For example, imagine a French country kitchen with pretty antique pewter cabinet pulls, or imagine opting for a beautiful crystal door handle instead of something that looks ordinary and plain.

A touch of nature is an excellent addition to just about any room, from a kitchen with pots of herbs to a family room with a vase of cheerful flowers. The type of container you choose, from a substantial pot that rests on the floor to a delicate vase that holds a single, dramatic stem, should be selected with care. When it comes to flowers, this is a great way to change the mood of the room throughout the year, selecting bouquets to fit the season. For plants, select greenery that you love but also plants that work well with the amount of natural light in your room.

Just about every room of the house can use a great rug. It might be a simple rug in just one color or it might be bold, but this is a detail you shouldn’t forget to add. A rug adds warmth and continuity to any space, even an outdoor living area. If you cannot find the rug that you need for your space, your professional interior decorator can design one for you or find a company that specializes in custom rugs.

A cluttered room can be very distracting, but adding a few great accessories to your rooms is a fun way to make your personality shine. One suggestion is to display some items that you collect, just make sure you don’t go overboard. For instance, maybe you collect antique glass jars. Setting out two or three favorites is a good idea, but you probably don’t want shelves filled with them. You can always swap out jars and replace them with new additions to your collection. A good designer can help you find clever ways to display collections. Other special touches in a room might include some unique throw pillows or perhaps a special item such as an antique violin or a family heirloom.

There are many reasons to hire an interior designer, and while people often think this is too expensive, you can save both time and money by hiring a professional. For one thing, a designer will get the project done correctly the first time, while do-it-yourself homeowners often make costly mistakes. We don’t have a ton of free time anyway, so hiring a designer will save you time and allow you the freedom to take care of other important tasks in your life. Before you start a project, consider hiring a professional interior design team to create the plans and carry out the project.
