Creating a living space that kids will love
By Harry Larfit
A family home needs to be a place where both adults and children can live together happily. Consequently, it is essential that the furnishings and dcor of the entire house should be carefully thought out.
Adult bedrooms are used principally for sleeping, as adults tend to spend more of their waking hours in the home’s general living space (kitchen, dining room or living room). But children’s rooms often have to fulfil the extra function of also being the child’s personal space – where, in addition to sleeping, the child will play, read, relax and (later) study.
For this reason, the dcor in a child’s room needs to be simple but versatile. Plain walls (to which the child’s favourite posters, pictures or stickers can be added) are preferable to patterned ones which can very quickly become outdated or fall from favour. One suggestion (though it isn’t for the faint-hearted!) might be to paint all or part of one wall with blackboard paint, and allow the child to add his or her own decorations with coloured chalks. Given that many teenagers subsequently go through a phase of wanting a black room, this might prove to be a good and popular compromise!
The dcor and furnishings in the remainder of the house also need to be child-friendly – particularly whilst the children are young. Here, common sense should prevail. Furniture, soft furnishings and floorings all need to be robust and easily cleaned, and anything breakable and/or valuable should be kept well and truly out of the reach of inquisitive toddlers.
Those who are lucky enough to have a large enough amount of outdoor space can also use some of it for an outdoor play area. Space permitting, a climbing-frame, trampoline or swings can be installed, whilst a suitable tree might even be able to accommodate a tree-house (health & safety constraints permitting…). Even a small garden can almost always spare a small corner where the child can build a “den”.
If the children are happy, then so are the parents – and a happy home will happily accommodate both.
