They are not really toys and they are not really ornaments. Action figures are hard to define but collectors know they are fun. There are 10 action figure sets that are amongst the most popular on the market and they are tied in to a movie or TV show.

Superheroes have always been the backbone of this merchandise, along with their corresponding villains. The first of the 10 action figures listed here is Batman Begins, based on the 2005 film of that name and starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader. Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman co-starred. The story involves a young Bruce Wayne studying the ways of the Ninja warrior. Figures depict Ra’s Al-Ghul, the leader of the Ninja cult, the Scarecrow and Batman in various forms, including Ninja Bruce, Bomb Blast Batman, Laser Blast Batman and Electro Strike Batman.

More superheroes appear in The Fantastic Four series. There have been two films so far and figures represent The Human Torch, Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman and Thing, along with adversaries, the Silver Surfer, Doctor Doom and Super Skrull. The Alien series of films began with Ridley Scott’s 1979 original. Of the 10 action figure sets, this is the most frightening, with Alien vs. Predator, Alien with Chestburster, Nostromo Astronaut with Face Hugger (and Cocooned Crew Member and Alien Egg).

The Star Trek franchise has produced five different TV series and several movies. The original 1960s TV show has a set of figures of the major characters, props and spacecraft. Captain Kirk holds a phaser gun and Spock is shown with his tricorder. There is also a model Enterprise and a Klingon Bird of Prey. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a hit show, from 1997 – 2003. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Spike, Angel, and Willow are all depicted. Buffy has her cross necklace, stake, crossbow and Vampyre book. Spike is shown with a broken skull and an amulet.

There is something for the kids too on the list of the best 10 action figure sets. Tim Burton’s 2005 film of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp has produced figures for Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket, Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt and Oompa Loompa. These are talking figures that speak lines from the film.

The animation for adults, Family Guy has figures for Series 1 – 7 and shows each Griffin family member with trademark props. Peter holds a TV remote, Lois is shown with a piano trophy and a beer bong, Chris has a Walkman and an evil monkey, Brian sips a martini and reads the newspaper and little Stewie has a laser rifle and a stuffed rabbit! On the 10 action figure list, the TV show, Lost is still gripping audiences. Figures have a photographic backdrop and sound clips, replicating key scenes in the plot. Jack comes out of the plane wreckage, Locke discovers the hatch, and Hurley is on the golf course.
