Make Your Patio A Year Round Social Center With These Great Tips

By Toasty Joe

A wonderful social area of your home would be that of the patio. Of course, those who do not live in a warm climate all year, may find that the patio is getting used for half of the year and in some cases, even less. If you want to entertain when the weather is not the warmest, there are ways to get around it, such as with the use of outdoor fireplaces. A nice fire, wonderful company and some delicious food will keep just about anyone warm.

The first thing to cut out is the wind; while summer breezes can cut the humidity and mugginess, cold blows across the snow are anything but. What you can do to make your patio more weather tolerant is getting shades or blinds in place, or perhaps the better word for it is ‘wind blocks’. These can be made from natural materials, like wood or bamboo, or they can be made from fabric hung with tile mosaic so that they’ll block the wind and add a pleasant sound.

Next, look for lighting that will warm up the place. While energy efficiency is a lovely thing, one of the secondary effects of good incandescent lights is that they warm the air around them. You can mix small light fixtures (to get rid of the harsh floodlight effect of most outdoor lights) with portable heat lamps to keep your patio warm in the fall and winter.

Naturally, the place where you sit also matters. Anyone who’s sat on a metal bench in the middle of winter knows how quickly they can suck the body heat out of you. You’ll want seats that are well padded, and covered with a waterproof cover, to keep yourself from getting too chilly. Standard ‘lounge furniture’ suitable for the summer won’t work out well for the fall or winter.

Besides good conversation and a nice place to sit, having some good food is always a way to make sure that everyone is happy and keeping warm. To cook your food, you will want to invest in an outdoor fire pit for your patio. This is the best way to cook and smoke your food. You can go for something simple or go for the expensive fire pit. Either way, as long as you are able to cook food and produce much needed heat for everyone at the same time, then you are on the right track.

Even if you do not have intentions to cook your food outside, you still want to add the outdoor fireplace for your grill. Since there are many wonderful options for outdoor fireplaces, you should have no problem finding exactly what you need.

Then again, maybe the outdoor fireplace or fire pit is something that is a little too much for your budget. If that is the case, you will want to use patio heaters, such as floor heaters, to make sure that you are getting the warmth you need. Make sure that you are using the right electrical outlets for them though.

Getting the most out of your patio in colder months is one of the great joys of innovative home ownership, and a lot of these options, like outdoor fireplaces or outdoor fire pits, will add to the resale value of your home. Give them a look see – many of them are a lot more affordable than you’d think.
