The Lego building set is without doubt the most versatile, and popular, construction set that has ever been developed. Because of its modular elements, it has the ability to create almost anything a child can imagine. This year, the designers at Lego have produced what is probably the most extensive set in the series designed around the Harry Potter stories. Just released in October 2010, the latest version of Hogwarts Castle comes with 1290 pieces, making it one of the larger sets they have produced, and certainly it is one of the most highly anticipated ones.

This latest set comes equipped with a cast of nine characters – Harry (of course!), Professors McGonagall, Snape, and Flitwick, Albus Dumbledore, Lord Voldemort, Argus Fitch and his cat, Hermoine Granger, Mrs Norris, and two Dementors are included to keep things interesting. All these mini-figures can roam through the four rooms in this new Castle. The open-topped Astronomy Tower is the first room, which is also a part of the Library. The Room of Requirement is also located in this tower as well. The equipment for this part of the building includes the telescope, several books, and the Vanishing Cabinet.

Next to the Astronomy Tower is the tallest part of the structure, which most likely represents Gryffindor Tower. This tower contains a variety of smaller rooms. These include the Gryffindor Common Room, the Syltherin Room, the Owlery, and a room which may be Filch’s Office. There is a fireplace through which Sirius and Harry could exchange messages. This tower is furnished with a variety of tables and chairs.

The major building of the set is the Great Hall. Real improvements can be seen when this version is compared to the previous version of this Castle. The ceiling is now made up of Lego pieces, instead of the inferior cardboard that was used in the earlier set. The Great Hall includes tables, and staff chairs. The Sorting Hat is also provided as a part of the set.

The final building in the structure is a tower with a top that is partially open. Below this there are two rooms, one over the other. The lowest room has a neat spiral staircase. In the room above, Dumbledore’s office has his working table and other furnishings. This set also provides the important Invisibility Cloak. The other set that includes this vital feature is the new Lego Hogwarts Express, Set 4841. The cast of mini-figure characters that is provided with this set includes three newcomers – Mrs. Norris, Professor Flitwick, and Argus Filch.

There have been three prior Lego versions of this great Castle. The first one released was set 4709. It was only about half the size of this new set, based on piece count, with 682 pieces. It included seven mini-figure characters. Those who bought it liked it a great deal, based on published reviews, and it was given high ratings. Some of the details this first included were the revolving portraits, owls that roosting in the spires, and dramatic flaming torches mounted on the walls. The next version of the Castle that Lego released was numbered Set 4757. It was taken from the story The Prisoner of Azkaban. This set was quite a bit larger than the first, with 927 pieces. Among the new features it incorporated were the Clock Tower, complete with its swinging pendulum, and Professor Trelawney’s classroom. Included in the set was Gryffindor Tower. The set also came with two Dementors. Adding to the Dementors, the cast of mini-figures included Harry, Professor Trelawney, Hermoine Granger, Ron Weasley, Professor Dumbledore, and Draco Malfoy. The most recent version of the Hogwarts Castle prior to this newest set was Set 5378, based on the story of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It was released in July 2007, and it was the most ambitious version of the Castle yet. With a total of 943 pieces, it was a bit larger than its predecessor, and it included additional characters. It had nine in all, including Dolores Umbridge. Another interesting feature of this set was the two Thestral mini-figures. This set is also still available new, but with very limited availability.
