A growing number of consumer items are trumpeted as organic products, so much so that the word “organic” has become fashionable. Yet, you should not be hasty, instead consider and weigh the arguments for and against organic foods. It would be tough for the average person to spot the differences without a closer look.

Some people feel uneasy about the safety factor of genetically modified food products. The word “organic” found on a food product label signifies that the subject food was produced on land reputed to be free of chemicals for a number of years. In addition, such organic food products are produced sans pesticides and other chemicals. The use of artificial preservatives, colorings or any other additives are prohibited when the food products are being processed and packed.

In order to be classified as organic, there must be no pesticides and other chemicals used during the cultivation stage. Likewise, preservatives, colorings or any other artificial enhancer are not present when the goods are being processed and packed.

The superiority of organic foods is also proven by a study conducted on twelve different foods which showed that organic food products are more nutritious and contains more micronutrients. Richer levels of vitamins A, B, C and E, zinc and other elements and minerals like calcium are among the nutritional pros that can found in organic foods. There are also little or no danger of health complications identified with pesticides and antibiotics in organic foods. It has been proven that there are less heavy metals and almost no hydrogenated fat in organic food, unlike non-organic processed food that may have both.

Nonetheless, there are some questions about the merits of consuming organic foods. There might be more harm in the use of manure in organic compost than the danger to one’s health associated with pesticides and chemicals used on non-organic farms. People exposed to food fertilized by manure containing E. coli bacterium may be infected with animal diseases. Besides, organic food can be produced as much as non-organic food. Using the organic farming system will produce less than farming with modern intensive methods.

This is the reason why organic foods are priced as much as double that of non-organic foods. To insist on producing organic food at the expense of non-organic food may result in shortages on a massive scale.
