Thinking Errors

Thinking errors are precisely what they sound like – problems in thinking which are usually made time and time again. They will vary from mistakes in the reality that a mistake is a one-time error. Adults make thinking errors almost all the time – regarding me personally, it’s justifying something to do exactly what I want. For example, I’ve been trying to pay off a few bills, and as a result have been making an effort to not shell out any cash on things that aren’t essential. I’ve been doing a fairly good job at that, and yesterday I told myself “You’ve been doing such a good job at not spending money that you are worthy of a reward of a latte from Starbucks”. That is a thinking error – it’s justifying the fact that I need a latte, when in reality that would be spending money instead of saving it!

Children are well known for experiencing thinking errors. They will get into problems any time these kinds of thinking errors, or “stinking thinking” as I’ve truly heard the idea called, causes them to be aggressive, take on risks, and attempt to manipulate additional individuals. I have a son who this represents to a “T”. He is continuously justifying his actions and behaviors by believing thinking errors, that are usually absolutely not logical as far as we’re concerned, but make excellent sense to him.

What precisely are usually a few of these kinds of thinking errors? James Lehman, author of the Total Transformation, gives us a list of five of them in one of his articles.

1. The victim position. Almost nothing is his fault. That is 1 of the most typical of the thinking errors which your kids make use of to rationalize them not meeting their responsibilities. Typically, this is simply a cop-out simply because the task they’re supposed to complete is too hard, uninteresting, or stupid.

2. Uniqueness. Sometimes they just believe no one else is similar to them. They will not have to study to pass a test. He won’t be silly enough to drink if he goes to a party where by everyone else is drinking. They believe they’re special.

3. One-way training. This is any time your own teenager quite simply bullies you and resists you vigorously so you will not likely confront him in the future. Temper fits are perfect for this – door slamming, shouting, swearing – all things of which mom and dad do not prefer to deal with. So not mainly are you not necessarily coaching him to deal with conflict in a balanced way, he is training you to leave him alone.

4. Lying and sneaking. Fact stacking and partialization are two methods they perform this. Fact stacking will be supplying you the information, but putting these in an order which justifies their particular behavior. Partialization is when that they just tell you half the actual fact, or even carry out 1 / 2 the actual job, as in studying, and then explain to you they performed it.

5. Turnaround. Your young person puts you on the defensive simply by asking you a question whenever you ask him one. It is supposed to throw you off track, and it usually can.

There are several examples of “stinking thinking” that seem quite complicated, however kids are able to master with the greatest of ease!
