Plumbers In Richmond VA Offer Tips To Prevent Disaster In The Laundry

By Janell Bowers

Today, most homes and many apartments have laundry facilities. These facilities are very convenient for ensuring one has clean cloths for the next day. They also prevent carrying all the dirty clothes to a coin operated facility for cleaning. However, the additional plumbing facilities in the home are also a potential disaster. Plumbers in Richmond VA provide these tips that will help homeowners avoid the potential disaster lurking in the laundry.

Most washing machines are attached to the water supply using rubber hoses. These hoses are often under constant pressure as most owners leave the hose bib in the on position for additional convenience. Stainless steel braided hoses are available that last longer and are less likely to leak or crack. Use these hoses to replace the rubber ones. If occupants plan to be away from home overnight, be sure the water supply to the washer is turned off. If a leak develops while the home is unoccupied and the water is on it is possible to return to a flooded home.

Strainers should be added to sinks to prevent hair, fibers from cloth, soap and debris do not cause clogged drains. Local hardware stores should also have strainers available for the end of the drain hose from the washing machine. These devices will need to be emptied regularly but are vital to prevent clogged sewer lines.

If occupants notice a bad smell in the laundry the problem could be a dry trap. Floor drains and laundry sinks often do not get enough use to keep traps filled with water. This allows sewer gas to leak into the home. Pour a bucket of water down these drains occasionally to ensure the traps are kept full.

A flood alarm in the laundry can prevent a potential disaster. Alarms detect leaking or overflowing water to alert the homeowner to a problem. Catching the flood early often prevents the water from spreading to ruin flooring in the laundry and adjacent rooms. A second alternative is to install a drip pan under the washer. Plumb the drip pan to a drain line so accumulated water flows away without causing flooding to the room.

Set the thermostat on the water heater to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit on the water heater. This temperature is hot enough to sanitize laundry and operate the dishwasher effectively. Every degree above this setting increases the chance of burns by scalding. In addition, setting the temperature higher wastes energy.

Do not store flammable liquids in the laundry room, especially if there are gas fired appliances in the area, including a furnace, water heater or dryer. Adhesives, solvents or gasoline may ignite causing a home fire. In addition, do not wash or dry rags or clothing that have been soaked in gasoline the appliances.

While having a laundry in one’s home is far more convenient than toting clothing to the coin operated facility, it is important to know the potential dangers. These tips provided by plumbers in Richmond VA may help to avoid the potential problems that exist. If plumbing troubles are bothering the operation of a home, call these professionals for help.
