Plumbing Courses Set For Shakeup

By Leena Snowdale

Folks looking at plumbing courses so as to become a commissioned workman are suggested not to think about short courses. This alert comes after the organisation of Plumbing and Heating Contractors ( APHC ) stopped its endorsement of BPEC validation products after becoming discontented with some of the short courses offered by the organisation.

The APHC sold its 50 per cent stake in BPEC Services because it did not want to be associated with a training provider which allows students to use a certification logo despite not being fully qualified. Kevin McCallister, president of the APHC, said that British training providers who consider short courses to be acceptable forms of qualification to be a plumbing and heating engineer have become complacent.

“These providers are not demanding the bedrock skills such as an NVQ 2 as a pre-requisite prior to short course training,” he added. A number of BPEC’s training centres offered the short courses without the prerequisite NVQ Level 2, which resulted in the APHC temporarily terminating their partnership.

Mr McCallister went onto say that trainees with a documentation emblem have a tendency to confuse consumers because they wrongly accept that these learners are totally qualified because they have finished crash plumbing courses. Under-qualified plumbers who’ve passed short plumbing courses are able to unfairly contend with entirely licensed workmen due to public stupidity about their talents.

“We are fighting the struggle against rogue trainers so we do not have to also find licensing bodies providing courses and certificates to folks who aren’t qualified to be taking them,” asserted Mr McCallister. Would-be plumbers have to be aware that there’s no simple entry into the industry as a correct sequence of licensed and commissioned NVQ learning at the necessary level must be undertaken.

The necessary foundation course for plumbers is the Town & Guilds NVQ 6129 level two, which should permit trainees to progress onto NVQ level three. Mr McCallister suggested potential trainees to analyze training centers by taking a look at net discourse forums to find out what feedback has been left by prior scholars.

“Please, when booking a course ask if the supplier or controlling body you are buying services from permits an applicant to refer to themselves as a plumber after just a couple of days coaching and certification,” he added. There are very good prospects for folk entering the plumbing industry as Sam Bishop has managed to set up his very own business in Brighton after completing his tutelage at 20 years of age.
