To keep a pregnant woman and her unborn child healthy, she should take prenatal vitamins prior to and during her pregnancy. These vitamins are specially prepared to fill in any absence or deficit of essential nutrients in her diet. The baby inside her is in need of ample amounts of nutritional vitamins and minerals to facilitate good fetal development. If these nutrients aren’t supplied, harmful effects on the baby may surface.

A mother who takes prenatal vitamins will get adequate amounts of calcium, folic acid and iron. These are three of the most fundamental vitamins and minerals needed by developing babies. And how important are they anyway?

To start with, iron plays an important role in the development of red blood cells in the body. These cells are in charge of oxygen distribution throughout the entire system. Its absence or insufficiency may lead to the mother or the soon-to-be baby’s anemia and may also risk the complete development of the fetus.

On the other hand, vitamin B9 or what we commonly refer to as folic acid plays a part in the development of deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA. This nutrient is present in green, leafy vegetables and helps a lot in the growth of tissues and cells in the body. Neural tube defect, an illness that affects the neurological system most specially the brain and spinal cord, is a result of folate deficiency and unfortunately, this is very common among newborn babies.

Aside from the abovementioned, calcium is also supplied by prenatal vitamins. It’s a kind of mineral that is accountable for the development of bones & teeth. Calcium also contributes in the growth of healthy muscles, nerves and heart. If the mother doesn’t have enough calcium in her body, she may be put at risk too.

Having ample amounts of these minerals and vitamins is truly indispensable for pregnant women. Then again, be informed that these aren’t only provided by nutritional vitamins and supplements. Expecting women should also eat foods that are rich in these nutrients.

Prenatal vitamins aren’t really replacements for a healthy diet. These supplements are just taken to assist in the adequate supply of vitamins and minerals especially those that aren’t found in food like folic acid and calcium. However, it is important that an expecting mother should consult a medical professional like an OB Gynecologist before taking any pill or vitamin.
