In order to learn conversational hypnosis, you must first learn about people and how they interact. Some people are more resistant and they will show that in their body language while others may well be more receptive and reflect that. Depending on their state of mind, you may need to help them relax or not.
A good example is sports psychology. Some adverts have reduced this down to one line tag lines that can easily fit on a T shirt. But the fact is no athlete ever wants to lose and sometimes the problem goes deeper than that.
From a very young age, he was diagnosed with polio and spent many years bed ridden. Over time, he turned this situation to his advantage, learning non verbal communication by observing the people who would visit him.
Eventually, he developed these techniques on himself, easing his pain and helping himself to walk again. As he began to study psychotherapy, he developed a technique called brief therapy, a kind of concentrated reading that would allow him to treat patients over the course of a longer period of time.
This is essentially a simplified form of conversational hypnosis, the forming of a belief. The trick behind it is essentially the use of positive language. An example of the opposite is when a golfer is told not to hit their ball into the water. The subconscious focuses on the words telling them to hit the ball in the water, rather the command telling them not to.
It was that mindset that Erickson sought to manipulate when treating a patient. Many people are resistant to the idea of hypnosis. Understandably, people are afraid of losing control or exposing their deeper emotions. Erickson tried to go beyond the conscious mind, trying to find ways of unlocking the resistance.
One method he introduced that is now widely used is known as the handshake induction. The trick with this technique is to go from a firm to gentle grip and then gently brush the hand with the middle finger. It was at this point when the person becomes aware of the contact that Erickson would pull back, making the patient briefly subconsciously consider this. These gaps in the thought process are what would give Erickson a way in, helping to ease them into a state of mental relaxation.
Another influential process that Erickson created was the use of story and metaphor. You have probably seen memory contest champions who memorize a deck of cards with the aid of a mind map. With a mind map, a person pictures a room and places items around the self created room in order to remember the order of the cards. This is the kind of concept that Erickson would use with his patients to help them with their therapy.
Erickson used these techniques until late into his life, when he developed post polio syndrome. Confined to a wheelchair, he eased his symptoms with his own self hypnosis. It seems ironic to use Erickson as a metaphor, but his powers of persuasion are a good analogy for what can be achieved with conversational hypnosis.
