Revamping Your Window Dressings

By Sabrina Kaufman

When it comes to room makeovers, the small details can sometimes make as big an impression as the larger ones. When it comes to window dressings, the right ones can make all the difference. Windows are focal points in a room and tend to be noticed. Whether big or small in size, a well-dressed window can make quite an impression and sometimes a simple change in draperies or window coverings can re-invent an entire room.

There are numerous approaches to dressing windows. You can choose to match or coordinate curtains or draperies with other linens such as throw pillows, tablecloths or bedspreads. You could also choose window coverings that make their own unique decorating statement. Solid colors, patterns, layered looks, toppers, short or long — there are a wide variety of styles to choose from.

No matter what kind of decorating style you have, odds are you have some type of window dressing on each window in your home. Whether you choose to redecorate a room once every couple years or change your room with the seasons, window coverings have other purposes besides decorating a window. They not only complete a room but also provide privacy and alternate lighting options; they can also improve energy efficiency.

Most people fall into one of two categories with their decorating style. Either they prefer neutral tones, textures and patterns or lean towards a preference of bold colors, rich textures, and brave patterns. A few people really have no definitive style preference and prefer to use other features of a room to guide them in their selections. Either way, choose window coverings based on what you know you like. Choose ones you can live with for several months or else be prepared to switch them out when you grow weary of them.

If you are redecorating a room or decorating a new place for the first time, some things to keep in mind about window coverings include available light sources, the room’s function and other features, and the location of the window. For instance, a window facing east or west is going to let in the extremely bright light of the rising or setting sun. Window coverings offering some light diffusion or even complete blockage may be desired, depending on the room. Incidentally, when direct sunlight passes through a window without any reflective properties, there is the potential for sun damage to carpets and furniture upholstery. Window coverings that block sunlight can help reduce sun damage to other textiles, as well as reduce glare.

Aside from the practical factors like insulated draperies and UV-blocking curtains, the real fun of dressing windows comes in selecting the colors and styles that suit your room. You can choose to go all out in a dining room and coordinate window coverings, tablecloths, placemats, napkins, and chair cushions. You can opt for a classic color and style for a traditional family room or select romantic flowing curtains for a bedroom. You may choose to go formal for a living room or great room. The options are as limitless as your decorating styles and can be changed from season to season to reflect your mood.

Choosing window coverings also entails some attention to the window itself. The size and shape of the window plays a great role in selecting what it wears. Extra wide windows will probably require multiple coverings to make it appear full. For instance, plan on purchasing enough draperies, curtains, or window toppers to equal approximately three times the width of the window. In other words, a 60-inch window should have panels or valances totaling 120 inches in width. If a window is the wrong size or shape for your room, there are several tricks you can use to create the illusion of a different window altogether.

To create the illusion of a taller window, choose window panels that are longer than the window and hang the rod slightly higher than the top of the window. Top it off with a valance or scarf. To widen the appearance of a window, install hardware extended several inches beyond the window frame and fill in with window coverings. Be careful not to overpower a small window with too much dressing and conversely, avoid skimping on coverings for an excessively large window.

When selected correctly, window coverings can create a whole new look to a room, or easily revamp a tired, old window. Whether you select your window dressings first and base the rest of the room on the chosen color and style or select coverings that complete the rest of the room, window dressings are a great way to create a polished look.
