Sliding Closet Doors – Saving Space In Hallways And Bedrooms

By Joy Brown

Sliding closet doors are an excellent option because they are space savers. They usually are made from wood products and slide along a track on the floor and on the top frame of the closet.

A sliding door is just one of the choices when it comes to closing up a closet. You can get a louver, a conventional hinge door, a plstic bi-fold, a wooden bi-fold, and any of the other options available for closeting. Sliding doors are the only option, however, that does not take up additional floor space. Traditional doors require room to be able to swing open. This means you lose space in your room.

A bi-fold door does not offer much relief in the loss of floor department, as it can take up nearly two feet of floor space when being opened and closed.

You can have pocket doors which are very rustic and old world-y, or they can run along tracks from side to side of the closet opening. Those that are used for single closets can only be made in the pocket models because of the space constraint, as there would really be no place for it to slide to. For double closets, however, you have your pick of either.

There are primarily two types, the first type is wood the other type is plastic or laminate material. Most of the time they are hollow core doors, and they are constructed from wood products, all though they can be made from actual wood. The plastic or laminate sliding closet doors do not hold up as well as the wood styles.

Sliding closet doors can actually be cheaper than traditional closet doors, of course there is the track work to consider as well, but still the cost can be significantly cheaper than traditional closet doors. The price will vary and is dependent upon the size and the material.

When searching for sliding closet doors, be sure to consider the decor of the rest of the room.
