Avoiding Home Decorating Mistakes

By Abbie Osborne-Wilson

There are dozens of television shows and magazines devoted solely to home decorating. When you decide to redecorate your home, you should have no problem finding some great ideas. Most people begin by choosing a paint color or some furniture that they love and then they design their room around those choices. This is not always the best strategy. If you want to design a room that you will enjoy for years, you should avoid a few common decorating mistakes.

First, don’t begin with paint chips. This is the most common mistake people make when starting a decorating project. Skip the paint aisle in the home improvement store and look through the objects you already own. Find something that you adore and use it as your inspiration piece. It could be a beautiful silk blouse or an ornate area rug. It might just be the pattern on your dinner plates. When you find a piece that is inspiring and beautiful, then you are ready to begin your room makeover.

Neutral color as wall paint is the way to go, especially if you intend to change your decorations anytime soon. Of course, choosing a bright shade is acceptable. However, it will be an inconvenience on your part if the color will not suit your future decors, as you would have to do some repainting work. With a neutral tone, any kind of decors and all other colors can be easily matched. Changing your area rugs, curtains, carpet or furniture will be hassle-free as your walls will be a real chameleon in neutral shade, going well with every change in the room.

Your next step is to shop for furniture and accessories that reflect your inspiration piece. Many people forget to add accessories, but this is a huge mistake! The small details set beautiful rooms apart from average designs. Accessories are the perfect excuse to add bold punches of colors against your neutral wall color. Start with the big pieces and work your way down to the smallest accessories.

Do you ignore texture and materials? You’re making a mistake. Textures are an important part of home decorating. Going safe by blending similar materials are okay, particularly if you want a conventional and formal environment. It doesn’t mean though, that mixing and matching different textures is a misstep. In fact, different materials can give a unique twist to the room. A ceramic vase with intricate pattern will look more eye-catching when partnered with big flowers in bold color, or mixed colors, or with bare branches. The contrasting textures of the container and the content is an artwork.

In order to avoid one other decorating mistake is to look down. Yes, look down on the floor. Don’t get too preoccupied scanning the entire surroundings that you forget about your flooring. A clean and suitable carpet or flooring is of course necessary. But if you wish to make it better looking, capitalize on area rugs. These affordable and flexible decorating materials are also extremely manageable. Even if you already have a flawless floor, area rugs can still be added to make it even more flawless! Area rugs can instantly add color, texture, pattern and design to the over-all look of your living space. Whether you opt for a contemporary vibe, a traditional or old-fashioned ambiance, or a hippie look, area rugs can do the work in an instant. They are the perfect finishing touches to make your home more beautiful than ever.

Don’t be ripped off by imitations. Be sure to buy authentic area rugs directly, like these purple area rugs.
