How Patio Awnings Benefit Your Family

By Effie R. Duvall

The benefits of patio awnings are great for you and your family. No longer will you worry about sun exposure because they provide shade for the entire patio, and are available with UVB and UVA protection. They can effectively block 99.9 percent of the harmful rays of the sun. The shade will make the patio cooler by up to 20 degrees.

The patio becomes cooler but so does the area just inside. The heat gain is reduced by up to 65 percent. The temperature is reduced by up to 15 degrees. That can add up to a real savings on air conditioning costs. The drapes, carpeting and furniture are protected from the rays of the sun that cause fading. Patio furniture will not scorch you when you go to take a seat or rest your arm on the table.

An awning can be made of vinyl, canvas or acrylic. There is also a good assortment of colors and patterns depending on where you purchase them from. These can be retractable or fixed. The retractable ones roll up into a cassette that can have a cover on it to keep it easy to maintain. The fixed ones will be up all seasons and may require a little more work. They can both cover a large area, some are 30 feet wide with an extension of 18 feet. These can be custom made and have more than one shape.

Of course the awning is great for the sun and rain over head, but sometimes there is wind and rain that blow in on the sides or front. To preserve your patio party there are panels for the sides and front. You have an outdoor enclosed space for a fraction of the price of a patio enclosure. The panels are about 5 feet in vertical length.

Keeping the awnings clean is important for maintaining the appearance and the durability of the material. The fixed awning will need to have the dirt and debris removed regularly. A good broom will work for this and it will work for snow as well. This will help prevent mold and mildew from growing. For the bars underneath a damp cloth once a month is good to keep them clear of dust and dirt. The retractable awning can just be hosed down once a month and allowed to fully dry before retracting again. If it doesn’t, with the cover on mold will definitely grow.

You can clean up mildew if it has formed on your awning. Use mildew cleaner and a stiff brush to scrub it off. Thoroughly rinse it and allow it to dry completely. Bleach is not an option for an awning. It can damage the material especially if it isn’t properly rinsed. It can also cause discoloration.

You gain another space to your home by adding patio awnings. The kids have an outdoor space to play without the sun damage and you have another place to entertain even when it is raining. They are a beautiful addition to your home.

Patio awnings are a fantastic addition to any patio or deck. Get the inside scoop on simply the best patio awnings Citrus Heights in our comprehensive awnings review.
