The Different Kinds Of Water Filters

By Wilson Tasker

There are several different kinds of water filters and systems that are used to purify water. The type of system that is used depends on how the final product of the water will be used. Systems to purify drinking water will be different than processes used to purify pharmaceutical water. Among the various filtration systems, there are sieves that are used to trap impurities from the water. There is the absorption method that uses other substances to cleanse the water. There are screens that are used block impurities from the water.

The commonly used systems for cleaning water are media filtration, screens, disks, slow sand and rapid sand filtration and cloth filters. Media filters use sand or crushed rocks to filter out the impurities from drinking water. This system is also used to clean pool water and stormwater systems. Most city drinking water systems use this method of filtration. Layers of sand are used to filter the water. Impurities are left behind and the water becomes safe for human consumption.

A screen filter uses a screen to separate impurities from the water usually for irrigation or industrial purposes. These systems are used to filter out sand or items that cannot pass through the screens. They are not used to separate items like algae which can easily pass through the screens. The screens are made of stainless steel in the form of a mesh barrier.

Slow sand filters are also used to purify water. They differ from other filtration systems in that they use biological systems to cleanse water. Slow sand filters do not utilize chemicals to treat the water. The purification system uses scraping mechanism to filter the top layers of the water.

Cloth filters are not used in highly developed countries. They are typically used in third world countries that do not have modern filtration systems. The process was created in India. A cloth filter is simply a piece of cloth that is used to remove impurities from drinking water. This method reduces the amount of pathogens in the drinking water. This is the least safe method of water filtration.

There are a number of filtration systems that are made for the home. Point of use systems come in many different systems. There is the multi-barrier system that uses several layers of filtration to process the water. Less complex systems would include jug filters. These are used to filter small amounts of water for drinking.

Portable water filters are also available. These are commonly used by those in the military. Or individuals that spend a lot of time trekking in the outdoors. The portable systems use a pump to pump out the impurities from the water. The impurities are separated into a tube and removed from the water making it safe to drink. This manual pumps remove such items as bacteria, microbes and protozoa.

Water filters have been utilized for thousands of years. The first filtration systems were found in ancient Egypt. The more modern filtration systems were not developed until the beginning of the 19th century. The first system developed for mass use was the slow sand filtration method. This method provided safe drinking water for large populations. There are several other systems that are still in affect today. Some of these systems use chemicals, many others do not.
