Cleaning vertical blinds is a task no one really enjoys. When looking at regular cleaning, they are often neglected. But, like nearly all cleaning jobs, they can be easy if done regularly. Here are some easy things you can do to get them clean.
Before you get started, move the furniture around the window. If you use liquid sprays or soapy water, you do not want these getting on your other furniture. If they did, you would just have something else to clean up when you finish with the window blinds.
If the window blinds are made of fabric, vinyl, or wood, they can be easily cleaned. If it is possible, use a duster, soft cloth, or the soft brush attachment from a vacuum. Follow their direction when cleaning. Wearing gloves or putting socks on your hands to remove the dust is a great solution.
Regardless of the type of blind you have, be gentle. Vinyl and wood blinds are quite sturdy but you do not want to accidentally bend or dent them. The fabric may be perforated so try not to make any unwanted holes.
Ensure you clean the window blinds in both the closed and open positions. It is surprising how many forget, later realizing the job was only half done. No one wants to find dirty closed blinds when company arrives.
If your blinds have been neglected, there will be more than a small amount of dust. You will need to work a lot more to get them clean. Depending on the material, there are many ways to do this.
When cleaning vinyl blinds, you should use a cloth or damp sponge with either soapy water or an all-purpose cleaner. The window blinds may need to be removed from their track to sufficiently clean them. You may even need to use your outside hose. If the window blinds are heavily caked with dirt, you should soak them in a bathtub filled with warm soapy water. Ensure you place towels on the inside of the tub to avoid scratches. Once they have been soaking, removing the dirt should be easy. Hang them in the window to air dry.
Most fabric blinds are able to be vacuumed if using the soft brush attachments. If this does not remove all the dust, you can use a damp cloth and warm water. It might be possible to remove the fabric from the window blinds and put them in the washing machine. Check with the manufacturer or the tag on the fabric to see if they can be safely washed and removed.
Wood blinds should be cleaned with a soft cloth and all-purpose wood cleaner. This works for both finished and unfinished wood. Using an old pair of gloves and the wood cleaner are a great method for cleaning wood blinds. Water should never be used as it may cause blinds to warp and crack.
Once you finish cleaning the window blinds, try going over the slats with a sheet of fabric softener. The dust will be repelled for longer. Regularly cleaning your vertical blinds will make each cleaning easier.
