A popular decorating style is the fusion of sophistication and simplicity. For many, they call it the shabby chic design. Because of the combination of the elegant and rustic elements, there is a feeling of comfort and class in the living space.

Whites and other light neutrals are the essential colors behind an effective shabby chic color scheme. Decorating in this style mandates at least a few trips to some local thrift stores to pick up a few vintage pieces that can really spice up the room you are decorating. You also may be able to resurrect a few of those pieces you’ve had in storage or tucked away in the attic; anything that has that old, care-worn look can be used effectively in shabby chic decor. A big fluffy couch with lots of pillows or an old loveseat or recliner that is still in good repair but just needs a little TLC may make great pieces for you to build the room around. A word of caution, do not take the shabby part of shabby chic to too much of an extreme; there is a difference between care-worn and worn out.

Repainting the furniture and compartments a glossy color gives the space a sophisticated look. If you want the shabby quality for the furniture, you can always shop in thrift stores and flea markets for vintage things. The best part is not having to spend a lot for buying new furniture.

If on the other hand, you don’t have many vintage things, a visit to the nearest thrift store, yard sale and flea markets answers your concern. You can easily find old things in these places. Take your time in selecting items. It’s not a good idea to just grab old things for the sake of having such for your shabby chic design. Choose with taste and ensure that the items go well with the rest of the room.

Area rugs are a must with shabby chic since it really goes well with hardwood floors. This may be the one occasion where you can pull off a shag area rug, but please only in moderation. A neutral area rug with faded floral patterns or stripes may accent the rest of your decor well.

Painted metal is also another common element seen in shabby chic. Older homes and apartments may offer you an excellent opportunity to do this with metal radiators. Again a word of caution, don’t try to paint the radiators while they are on.

Shabby chic has its own special sense of elegance and is an excellent interior design option for those on a tight budget. Following the tips outlined above you can blend a lot of old and a little bit of new to create you own shabby chic paradise.
