Tips On Hiring A Vacation Home Caretaker

By Andrea Davidson

The appropriate maintenance of a leisure property is often placed in the hands of a vacation home caretaker. This is due to the fact that most individuals only use dwellings of this type a few times per year. This is why they must rely on other people to ensure that their properties are appropriately maintained according to their individual preferences. This will ensure that the home can be occupied when ever the owners decide to visit the area.

The duties of a caretaker involve a wide variety of tasks. These may include making repairs, keeping the home clean, and inspecting it for damage due to inclement weather or other outside forces. They must also ensure that no one has entered the property without permission by looking for signs that someone is using the home when the owners are clearly not there.

Those who take care of vacation homes for others should also perform minor duties such as changing light bulbs, vacuuming and dusting. In certain cases, they may have to contact a pest-control company if they discover that insects have invaded the property. The owner of the property may also assign additional duties to the caretaker.

Due to the fact that property caretakers are trusted with one of the family’s most valuable investments, which of course is a vacation home, they must have a good work ethic and be completely trustworthy. They may spend considerable amounts of time alone in the dwelling and on the surrounding property, and the owner must be sure that the caretaker will act in his or her best interests at all times.

Essentially, individuals who are perfect for such tasks are those who can anticipate precisely what the homeowner would do in numerous situations and proceed to act in a similar way. It can be challenging to ensure this is the case if the individual is a stranger, however. This is why some people hire only people they know to care for such a property, such as relatives or business associates.

Professional caretakers are usually bonded and licensed. If one plans to hire a person to care for a property, it is essential to select an agency with care, and research the background of any person the company sends. This task should be completed even if the company states that the individual they are sending is highly qualified.

Individuals become vacation property caretakers for a vast array of reasons. Some people in this line of work take care of multiple properties, and subsequently earn a good income at their trade. Others care for just a handful of properties, and choose this line of work simply because they enjoy working independently in a quiet, peaceful atmosphere and are handy with all aspects of home maintenance. Still others receive discounts on their primary living quarters if they oversee the care of nearby properties.

When searching for a vacation home caretaker, one should not make a hasty decision. This is because such a property is a large investment, and for this reason the owner should take his or her time when selecting a person to care for the property. Most families are pleased when they know that their secondary dwelling is being properly maintained and watched over by a competent individual.
