Although hanging a picture is not hard, it may be a frustrating experience. It can take as many as three tries to get the picture in just the right place. Each of those “tries” resultsin an extra hole that will one day need to be repaired.
A while back I had been asked to hang a picture. Planning my strategy had used fifteen minutes or so which led me to pure procrastination. (Remember I really do not like putting holes in walls). Being the evolved (lazy) person I am, I of course started looking for a “better way” to hang pictures. I won’t bore you with all of the creative ideas I had, ranging from bazaar, through just stupid, to what might actually be pretty good.
So if this is going to really work, it must address the main picture hanging “speed bumps”.
1) Since you can’t see behind the picture makes it hard to get the nail in the right place.
2) It must be simple to use.
3) It can not cost too much.
4) Helps the user save time
5) Be able to use on all sizes and hanging options.
6) Does not require writing on walls.
Going through this list, I thought it met all of the criteria. I deserved a break.
I needed a catchy name that would be easy to remember.
Easy Hang – Too general
Picture hanging aid – Milk toast
Transfer Triangle – Bingo!
Now that I was a real inventor, why couldn’t I take this to market? Finding a source to assist me in the development took some time and resulted in samples that looked the way I wanted them to but did not work properly. That took the wind out of my sales and resulted in my putting the project on hold for a while.
OK, two years later I have transfer triangles but no marketing plan. How hard can that be to develop? Flyers, radio, e-mails or maybe a web business.
Skip forward a year and a half and I have learned many things about internet marketing. The training (hundreds of hours) and skills I have picked up will be very valuable. (I’m sure) I didn’t know there was that much to just putting up a website.
The next steps will be to get samples in peoples hands to get feedback. I will try e-mails, web 2.0 stuff, radio spots. Whatever it takes to get this “new” product out and in use. Having read this, you know the truth behind transfer triangles.
