What is Heat Shrink Wrap and what exactly is it Used For?

All products and packages in the world have to be sealed, wrapped and sterilized by something right? That something is heat shrink wrap. This polymer plastic film material uses heat to “shrink” over whatever product it may be covering. The heat is usually applied with a tunnel, conveyer, over or even a handheld heat gun depending on the size of the project.

Most brands of meats and cheese are also sealed with this heat shrink wrapping material for freshness. Adding tamper proof seals or sterilization seals is also an option for some products with the shrink wrap. Some everyday items you see that are sealed with the heat shrink of this type are kegs, bags and pouches, cartons and beverage cans like soda cans.

Product packaging is not the only use for heat shrink wrapping materials however. Electrical wiring is often sealed, secured and protected by heat shrink tubes, sleeves and sheets.

One item you may be surprised to learn that the heat shrink wrap often covers are buildings. This technique is mainly used for the covering of rooftops after a major disaster like a hurricane or tornado. The wrap can also some in handy for containing any environmental threats like asbestos and lead.

Next time you are at a store that sells magazines, not the ones covered in plastic wrapping. These too were covered and sealed by the heat wrap material. These varieties of magazines are covered either to protect the quality and value or to keep minor’s eyes out. After reading this you hopefully become more aware of the abundant amount of products that get sent through the heat shrink wrap machines daily. Next time you see your products wrapped in plastic, know they were probably done so by the shrink wrap.
