What To Know About Preparing For Successful Exterior House Painting Success

By Joan Nussbaum

Home maintenance is a top priority with homeowners, and exterior house painting is one of the larger jobs that needs to be done with care. A new coat of paint every few years will not only make your house look well kept and beautiful, it helps prevent damage from water, dirt, and molds. Replacing damaged siding is an expensive proposition, but caring for it will prevent any need for that. The first and most important step is the preparation for painting.

It can be extremely costly to replace siding, but with proper maintenance and repainting you will never have to take that step. Your first step, and the most critical one, will be the preparation.

This is a difficult job, and it may be best to hire professional painters to do it. If you do decide to take on the job of exterior house painting, first of all prepare the entire surface. Take enough time to do this important step thoroughly and properly, since the success of the job depends on the preparation you take.

Water damage often is the cause of peeling paint, so it is important to find and fix the source of the problem. Then completely scrape away any loose paint with a scraper, and sand the area to smooth the edges. Any bare wood will need to be primed. Using a wire brush is the best way to clean up rough sidings such as cedar.

Remove any peeling or blistered paint with a scraper or putty knife, taking care to remove all the loose and flaking bits. Since this is often a result of water getting behind the paint, look for the source of the damage, and fix it. Once the loose paint has been scraped away, sand the area to smooth it, preparing the bare wood for priming. You may find a wire brush useful for removing paint if you have rough cedar siding.

Now, check for loose flashings or deteriorated caulking around windows and doors. Refasten any loose flashing properly. They are your primary defense against water getting beneath the exterior finish of your home. If the caulking has deteriorated or come away, remove it and re-caulk, using a good exterior caulking that can take outdoor conditions for your area.

Loose flashings or caulking will allow water to penetrate beneath the exterior siding of your home, so must be fixed before you begin with the exterior house painting. Remove all damaged or deteriorated caulking and replaced it with new caulking that is made for exterior use. Flashings need to be checked and repaired if loose or replaced if damaged.

When all repairs have been completed to your satisfaction, the entire outer area must be washed down. There will be a coating of dust and pollens that have been deposited there by wind and rain, and need to be removed. Washing with a power washer will remove these, as well as clean the paint from the weathering it has experienced over the years. Your new coat of paint will adhere much better to a clean surface than a dusty one.

Now you just need the paint, and a spell of clear weather to get to your exterior house painting. Make sure the outside temperature is warm enough, but not too hot so the paint dries too quickly. Look for a calm day, with no sign of rain in the forecast, and get started.

Get the details you need to find the most efficient and effective exterior house painters available fast and easy! When you work with experienced house painters, you can easily increase the beauty and value of your home!
