A Brief Overview Of Survival Kits To Be Prepared For Emergency Or Disaster

By Gretchen Robertvine

One can never be sure when some kind of disaster or emergency may hit. Experts suggest that homeowners, business owners, and workers keep disaster survival kits to be prepared for emergency or disaster. There are several determining factors for what would be in these kits.

Destructive weather phenomena, such as hurricanes, can be tracked by weather experts for days or even weeks in advance. Still, even with their best efforts, the experts can’t precisely predict where the storms will make landfall. Other types of disasters, such as earthquakes, fires, or terrorist attacks, may come without any warning at all. In any case, having a special kit full of tools or non-perishable supplies may help a person survive.

Search on the web, and you’ll find kits for many different purposes or locations. There are kits for the home, for the car, and for the workplace. The contents of the kits may depend on either the type of catastrophe for which one needs to prepare, or for which of the preceding venues it will be used.

Geographical location will be a determining factor for which type of emergency to be most ready. Residents of south Florida need to stay prepared for hurricanes, but they’ll probably never have to prepare for a snowstorm or frigid weather. In sleepy little towns, being ready for terrorist attacks needn’t be such a high priority, as it is in a large city like New York or Washington, D. C. Fires, however, can happen anywhere.

A fire evacuation kit may contain a breathing mask, a flashlight, a pair of goggles, and a whistle. Business owners may wish to issue these to their employees, and homeowners may wish to have one on hand for each member of the family.

Other kinds of disasters may cause the loss of one or more utility service, such as gas, water, or electricity. For these, there are kits that contain long-shelf life food items that don’t need either cooking or refrigeration, and sealed pouches of water. Flashlights and radios that are powered by internal hand-cranked generators are handy, and a portable emergency sanitation facility is a must. For areas that are earthquake-prone, kits come in crush-resistant cases.

There are special tools available to shut water or gas valves in case lines get damaged or broken. Some of these tools can also be used to dig through rubble after an earthquake.

For traveling, the handiest emergency tool would be a cell phone, so you can call someone for help. However, in many out-of-the-way areas, cell phones just won’t work. So, having a kit with blanket, non-perishable food, temporary shelter, and some fire-starters would be useful.

On the web, you’ll find numerous merchants of survival kits to be prepared for emergency or disaster. Most vendor sites are designed so that you can browse by various criteria. You can browse by where the kit is will get used, allowing you to find whatever you require for either work, home, car, or school. Browsing by the type of catastrophe helps you to find appropriate kits for blackouts, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, etc. Regardless of your needs, your preferred search engine will help you locate a provider.
