Base Your Indoor Garden On Coco Coir
If you live in an apartment or any place where there is no garden soil readily available, and you want to start indoor gardening, then coco coir could be the answer for you. This natural growing medium, which derives from the outer husk of coconuts, is a tough, clean fibre that is perfect for anchoring plants. If you buy a high-grade coir from an organic gardening or hydroponics company then the pH of the coir will be perfect for nutrient uptake. The very best quality coco coir is also pre-buffered to prevent “nutrient lock”. This ensures that the medium will not interfere with your plants’ feeding process.
When they think of indoor gardening, many people think of the dusty old plants their relatives had in pots in the sun room in the old days. How things have changed! It now is possible to undertake organic gardening on a wide scale on balcony, patio or in a sunny room. There are number of reasons that gardening inside has become so flexible.
Lovely containers for indoor gardening
There are wonderful pots and containers made of a multitude of materials, from plastic to terracotta, in which you can plant your indoor garden. There are lovely hanging baskets too. In addition, there are more foliage, flowering and fruiting plants available than ever before that are suitable for planting indoors. Finally, there are wonderful nutrient supplements and liquid fertilizers available to make it easy to grow lush, healthy plants.
If you use coco coir as your growing medium, you will find that it is odour-free, lasts a long time and retains moisture just sufficiently to ensure that the roots of your plants never dry out – and using coir ensure that your roots will never be so wet that they suffer from root rot.
Here are some ideas for successful indoor gardening:
- plant four or five herbs in a pot for your kitchen. Parsley, chives, thyme, sage and marjoram are a good perennial selection. In summer you can add sweet basil and coriander
- if you live in a hot climate then make the most of hardy plants like lavender, roses and rosemary for your balcony or patio – or you could become a collector of pelargoniums and geraniums which have the most amazing colours
- bulb plants are wonderful for temperate and cold climates,. There is a bulb for every season, each more stunning than the last, including lilies, hyacinths and tulips. You can colour code your bulb garden making it all white, all yellow, or all a mix of purple, white and red, for example. Bulbs do well in coco coir
- if you love flowers, why not start a daisy and foliage theme, or a fuchsia, gardenia and hibiscus display in a sunny entrance hall
- don’t’ forget miniature fruit trees, succulents and even hanging tomato and strawberry plants. All these are easy to grow in coco coir and highly attractive
- a container garden of foliage plants with variegated leaves is another possibility for a patio, and don’t forget those most hardy of all pot plants, the ficus family
Indoor gardening has come along way since the fern and delicious monster. Now you can have a fully fledged organic garden based entirely on coco coir.
