There are a huge selection of types of parsnips. Each of these varieties have their own unique characteristics. Some are far more productive than others which makes it suited to commercial planting. Some possess a strong taste while others are mild tasting.

With regards to local home gardening, you’ll find lots of good varieties to choose from. They are typically accessible in seed catalogues as well as in the local gardening shops.

The Harris Model type of parsnip could grow as long as 15 inches with smooth white skin along with finely grained flesh. It is the more common type of strain. Common to both home gardeners and even market growers, it doesn’t have side roots. It can be harvested in around 130 days.

The All American strain may be farmed sooner than the standard variety. It can be harvested in only 95 days compared to the others which take 125 days or more. The All American variety has a tender texture, with a sweet, nutty taste that’s best dug during the fall. It is tolerant to diseases and stores well, also.

Another variety of parsnip is Lancer. One of the best benefits of cultivating this cultivar is its extreme resistance to Canker, a disease that normally plagues parsnips. It is extremely productive so it will be really well suited for market growing. With smooth skin that’s evenly colored, it has a very delectable flavor.

Cobham Marrow generates roots that are around 8 inches long and it is normally sweeter than the majority of parsnip strains. This is the variety which most people utilize as a dessert. It is usually just glazed with brown sugar. It germinates very easily and will grow even in very heavy soil. It can be harvested 4 months after being sown.

Similar to the cultivar Hollow Crown, the Student cultivar is a  superior strain specifically because of its taste. It possesses a mellow flavor and very delicious when compared with other strains. On the other hand, this parsnip cultivar is not widely accessible so seeds can be a bit hard to come by.
