The economy is struggling and many people are looking to change careers. One career to consider is training to be a paralegal. A paralegal certificate will enable a person to be employed working for a licensed attorney. They are often known as legal assistants. This should not be confused with legal secretary.

While the job market has contracted for many positions it is still expanding for paralegals. This boon for paralegals is because law firms are letting go of their higher priced associates. Paralegals have some of the same job duties as law firm associates.

The jobs of paralegals vary but they usually revolve around legal research, analyzing documents, screening clients, and filing documents with the courts. These are areas that paralegals are trained for before receiving their certificates. They might also conduction interviews with potential witnesses to a particular type of case.

Finishing paralegal training is also quicker than for an attorney completing law school. It takes one-third of the time to become a paralegal. Just like for future attorneys, paralegal courses concentrate a great deal of time on research and writing. Paralegals will also receive basic training on a variety of law areas.

A student will have a course of study that will touch on the basic aspects of several areas of the law. They will only need to narrow their focus based on the firm that hires them. Working at the firm or business will allow a paralegal to be able to claim a speciality in a certain area of law. The more years one works for an attorney the more valuable they become to that lawyer.

Usually paralegals work for law firms but that is not always true. The locations for work are ever expanding. They can also be found working for the government and businesses.

Earning a paralegal certificate can lead to a promising career. One should attend an American Bar Association accredited school. This is a very solid choice for employment.
