For most people getting a divorce is the worst experience they will have had to date in their lives. Finding out part way through the process that they are using a solicitor who is not advising them properly or is costing more than they anticipated is the last thing they need. Taking time to choose the correct solicitor is very important.
First consider your circumstances, if your divorce is straightforward and does not involve assets or children then it may be possible to get a divorce with only initial advice from a solicitor. Most people need a solicitor so make sure that you find one who is experienced in cases like yours. If you have suffered abuse or domestic violence, then you need a solicitor who has past experience in dealing with these issues. If child custody is involved you need a firm of solicitors that has dealt with divorces involving children in the past.
At some point during the divorce process there will be points of particular conflict. Your choice of solicitor can affect whether these issues are quickly resolved or become problems that make the divorce process even more distressful and costly. If you can find a Resolution accredited solicitor, do so. The 5,500 member firms of this association work to principles which promote a non-confrontational approach to divorce.
Before settling on a solicitor speak to 2 or 3. Most solicitors offer a short initial consultation for a fixed fee or in some cases for free. Explain your situation to the solicitor and establish whether they have the relevant experience to deal with your case. Make sure that you choose a solicitor that you also feel comfortable with and whom you feel you can trust to act on your behalf. If you get 2 or 3 different opinions you will also better understand which courses of action are open to you.
Ask about costs, fees vary from firm to firm. The last thing you want is to be part way through the divorce only to realise that the legal bills are much higher than you anticipated.
