How Important Is Getting Citizenship?

By Scott Mansfield

For many born outside the United States, gaining U. S. Citizenship has changed many lives over the course of time for both personal and financial reasons. America is rich in culture and freedoms which makes the American dream not only special to those born within the States, but those who desire to become part of this culture. You may want to know how to apply for citizenship to begin living the dream.

When you place an application for citizenship you can either get the official forms from the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services local office or print the forms from their website. On the application do include any and all information that is asked of you and provide the required documents to show proof of anything that can be misconstrued. Above all else honesty is the best policy.

After you have applied an appointment will be made for fingerprinting. This is an important step in doing any background checks and for identity purposes. You must provide any and all documents required by the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Service to verify any information about yourself that may be vague or difficult to obtain.

The native language of the U. S. Is English and in order to become a citizen of this country you must learn to speak, read, and write the national language reasonably well. You must learn it in order to take the civics exam that is given on the history and government of America. Once you pass this portion of the application process you are nearly there.

You will be interviewed and asked questions about yourself and your background. Be honest with your answers as any false statements will cause your application to be denied. Also, bring with you to the interview your documents as evidence of anything in the application that must be explained or proven. After this process, you will take an oath of allegiance to the country renouncing any and all former governments you may have known.

It takes time to become a citizen of this country and will not happen overnight. Once you have passed all the previous stages all that is left is the citizenship ceremony. This is where you become an official citizen of this country and receive your certificate and take your oath.

If your application is continued, it means there are certain facts that need to be verified or proof shown to resolve the issues. When the necessary proof is given, the process can continue and will either be approved or denied. When you are denied, you can appeal the process through the proper channels. Once approved you will need to get a passport to further document your citizenship and provide proof of it if needed, in case you lose your certificate and must wait for a replacement.
