Recognizing Situations That Requires Legal Advice

By Connor Sullivan

There are times in life when it is obvious you need to seek legal advice. If you face a car accident or someone is threatening to sue you, there is no doubt you should get legal protection. However, other situations are less clear and it may not even occur to you to hire a lawyer. The problem is you may still be putting yourself at risk by not having professional advice from a lawyer. Many of these situations are not bad, but you still need the protection of a lawyer. For instance, do you have a great idea that will bring ease to the lives of others? You will want this idea protected so nobody else is able to profit from it. If you come up with a great idea for a product or service that will improve the lives of many, contact an IP patent attorney or a New York patent attorney. This way your idea will be legally yours and you will be the only person who profits from it.

Another time to consider contacting a lawyer is during your life transitions. If you are planning a wedding, it is a good idea to review your financial situation before the ceremony. You may want to get a prenuptial agreement in place, but even if this is not necessary, you will need to make legal changes to your estate upon marrying. Be sure your new spouse is now the guardian of your finances and living will; should the unexpected occur.

The same is true if you are expecting a child. While the child will not be able to become the legal guardian of anything, you will be able to set up a trust and make the child the recipient of your wealth. You will also want to speak with your lawyer about setting up additional methods of protection once you are a parent.

If you are a business owner, it is always a good idea to keep a lawyer on retainer for future considerations. This way there is protection should someone have a problem with your products or services and hold you legally responsible. Remember, having a lawyer familiar with your business who is able to support you at all times can save you a great deal of money.

Finally, a lawyer can guide you through large purchases or contract negotiations. Legal advice will help you before entering into a contract, so even if a deal appears to be trustworthy and on the up-and-up, it is still a good idea to have a pair of expert legal eyes look it over. This way your lawyer can catch something you may have missed in the document. If you are in doubt about need legal advice, take a few minutes to consider the consequences of not calling on the services of a lawyer.
