How To Run A Background Check Of Sex Offenders

By Steven Sea

All fifty states in the US were required by Congress to register a sex offender registry as at that time the public has no way of knowing if an offender was living in their neighborhoods. The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act were passed in 2006 and specific registration laws were placed in that offender need to update their particulars and whereabouts every three months.

In addition sex offenders had to reveal their true identity, photographs, place of employment and full date of birth. Finally the law created a national sex offender registry and it is now a felony crime if an offender fails to register.

The term sex offender applies to anyone that has been convicted of sexual crimes and those that have been convicted of any such felonies are required to register with their nearest police station after conviction. Registries are open to public viewing and employers or a member of the public can check these registries.

All one needs to do is go online and visit the US Justice Department or the FBI web sites and type in sex offender registries and the specified state. You need to be aware that these listings are not uniform and that a state registry may only show a list of resident offenders by map or zip codes which will include their addresses and photographs as well as their specific offense and vital stats.

Depending on the state as each state has their own laws and some allow you to search by name. Any person convicted of sexual offences decides to relocate they are required by law to re register in their new location even if it is another state so one might have to do a broader search from state to state. Some of the records only supply the names of those convicted of serious offenses such as rape.
