Internet And Intellectual Property Infringement
The widespread network and access of the internet has made policy makers come together and think about how best to protect intellectual property of the huge amount of data that is posted online on a daily basis.
Almost any original content on the internet, from videos and graphics to images and textual matter, can be intellectual property. An original creation can be secured from infringement by posting a copyright notice that will mention the terms and conditions of its authorized use. The notice should make it clear that the owner’s permission is compulsory before any reproduction of the content in any media, or before the posting the matter in any public domain, which includes the internet.
A trademark sign (TM) on a brand name or a logo can go a long way in safeguarding your brand related IP on the internet. Likewise, visual content secured by copyright laws can be watermarked, so that an irremovable imprint is created on the picture or video of which you have the copyright. This will deter people from replicating or reprinting it.
An extremely important aspect is how to monitor or detect an unauthorized use of your intellectual property on the web. This monitoring can be achieved in many ways. For example, you can do this by making use of a software particularly developed to find any online infringement of IP, particularly for textual content. You can also do a search on major search engines for your trademarks and find out where they are present on the internet. There are companies that offer specialised services related to infringement detection, and they will search and inform you of any infringement of copyright in return for a reasonable fee.
In case you find any illegal use of your content by some websites or companies, you can contact the site owner or administrator and tell him to take down your copyrighted content from the website. This can be done by issuing letters of warning to infringers. If the letters are not able to produce the desired effect, you can even prosecute the offender and seek compensation.
