Why Oil Rig Jobs are So Popular

If you’ve listened to the news in the past couple of years, you’ve probably heard that oil rig jobs are growing and are getting quite sought after. Plenty of folks who wouldn’t have thought about working in the oil business previously are now excited about the chance to land one of these coveted jobs. Why is this?

Most likely the number one reason is that these jobs are so lucrative! There are barely any careers that make as much on a per hour basis unless you’re looking at high-level tech jobs. There’s no doubt that oil rig jobs are tough work and often have long stretches in grueling environments, but they always reward laborers with a bunch of earnings.

For anyone who is making an effort to find a job in this tough job market, or who doesn’t have the education or resume required to get one of the high-level careers I mentioned previously, getting a job in the oil business can be the best way to earn lots of cash and have a secure career.

Another explanation for why these jobs are in demand is that oil companies are making enormous profits regardless of the weak economy, and are therefore still bringing people on like crazy. It’s almost impossible to see an industry lately that isn’t struggling with the bad economy, but oil companies have not been affected by this so they have no trouble hiring steadily. This means that there are lots of opportunities to be had with these businesses, for lots of different skill sets. These jobs can be anything from manual labor to supervisors to computer technicians, so there’s opportunity for nearly everyone.

The last reason that oilcareers are so popular is that many of them provide a lot of time off relative to jobs in other industries. It’s normal for offshore workers to work for two weeks or a few weeks in a row and then have a break of 2 or more weeks. This means that even though offshore workers can be out in the field for extended stays, they also get lots of much-needed time on vacation too. When you combine this with the fantastic salary, this means that most oilfield workers can earn in 6 months what other people earn in a year!

Sam McKenzie blogs about careers and the job market for a number of Internet news sites. He has written about oilcareers for many years.
