The Importance Of Florida Shipwrecks

By Maryanne Goff

Florida history is tied to the marine context. This is because of the longest coastline in the continental of the United States and with the Florida having the largest inland waters. The remains of ships and boats has therefore remains an important feature for the archeological and historical preservation. A research on Florida shipwrecks however shows that these sites are continually facing looting and vandalism by the sport divers and other interested personnel.

These remains have been very beneficial to the states that they are found in. For instance in Florida the story of each of the ship remains adds to the local history of the country. They give the story of the people who occupied the country many years ago. This as therefore assisted the historians to add a full record of the events that happened a very long time ago. This as greatly assisted in passing over the history of the future generations.

These remains have also greatly assisted in the economic development of Florida. Many people are attracted from within and without to come to the state to have a view of these remains. These tourists both the local and international pay some money. This is the revenue money that has assisted in the economic development of the state.

Factors affecting the Florida shipwrecks that are made of wood and are unprotected are usually the ship worms and other sea creatures that are present on the soil. The ship worms are mostly found in highly saline waters like the Caribbean. They are usually known to be boring the wood structures that are immersed in water. With time they get to destroy whole structure and therefore destroying the shipwreck.

However the steam boilers and the pressure vessel are often not affected by the corrosion influence. They therefore tend to remain in water for a very long time. Other items like the propellers and the condensers got to remain in the sea water for a very long period.

There is also the category that is referred to as Military wrecks. This reveals information on the battle that occurred in the past. This was cause by the skirmish at the sea.

The fact that some most of these ships and boat remains are found in sea water has a diverse effect on the remains. The saline conditions usually stimulate the rate of decaying. Thus the wreck gets to decay much faster when they are in sea water. This factor has therefore lead to the disappearance of some of the important remains with time.

Some of the shipwrecks are famous for some tragic events. This include the titanic, Lusitania and the Andrea Doria. The importance of Florida shipwrecks reveals that most of these remains usually bring back lessons to the people in the world today assisting then not to fall to the same trap and fate.
