Cutting Energy Waste To Save Money
By Rickie Sol | February 4, 2010
The holidays are a wonderful time, but opening your utility bill in January can make you drop to your knees. If you are tired of paying high energy costs, here are some things you can do.
1. If one part of your home gets toasty while another stays cold, you can circulate the heat using your heating system. Instead of turning on the heater, just turn on the fan. This saves money and should even out the temperature in your house.
2. When considering the layout of solar panels on your home, it is vital that you consider how to maximize the exposure to the sun. This is known as “orienting” and involves placeing the panels in such a position that they receive as much sun as possible.
3. Choosing Oil For Your Car ” You cannot use just any old oil for your car. Using the wrong grade of oil can reduce mileage up to three percent. Check your car manual for the correct grade.
4. Programmable Thermostats Save Money ” Heating your home can be expensive. Programmable thermostats let you save money by setting the times when heating should occur and when it should not such as when you are at work.
5. Insulate Your Hot Water Heater ” Your hot water heater can be a huge waste of money. The heat escapes through the walls of the heater. Buy one of the water heater insulation wraps to save money.
6. Heating Two Story Homes ” Heat moves up, so you can manipulate it with your multi-level home. Close all vents other than on the lowest floor. Heat will migrate up and you will spend less.
7. Tire Air Pressure ” Your tires are the single most important factor in your gas mileage. If they are underinflated, you are dragging them along.
8. Turn off the AC ” When driving, one of the big gas guzzlers is your air conditioning. Only use it when absolutely necessary. Roll down the window and get some fresh air.
9. Financing Energy Efficiency in New York ” If you live in New York, you can get financing for buying energy efficient products for your home. Financing is up to $10,000 and can be used for purchase and installation.
10. Coasting Gas Mileage ” You can improve your gas mileage by not roaring up to red lights and stop signs. It is RED! Coasting can add two to three miles to your mpg ratings.
You should notice that the above tips do not really require you to make any drastic changes in your life. It is more a matter of eliminating the sloppy things to save some serious money.
