Sanibel Island Vacation: Perfection
The vacation of your dreams is waiting for you on Sanibel Island. It’s the perfect spot: a little barrier island off the southwest coast of Florida, where you can gather seashells while exploring the white sand beaches and see an incredible array of wildlife in their natural habitat.
Your Sanibel Island vacation promises all of this, and so much more. Of course, you want everything to be perfect. The following tips will help you prepare for the things you need, and create the vacation you’ve always wanted:
What Should I Pack?
It’s summertime all year and the living is easy on Sanibel Island, so you won’t need to bring a lot of gear or pack three changes of clothes for each day. Your personal comfort should be a first priority in this relaxing piece of paradise.
Bring Your Binoculars: A good pair of binoculars should be a prerequisite for everyone packing for their Sanibel Island vacation. With binoculars in hand, you can get up close and personal with the incredible abundance of natural wildlife sharing your little piece of paradise. Keep binoculars handy while exploring the country or relaxing on the beach, because you never know what sorts of birds and animals will most certainly cross your path. Sanibel’s sister island, Captiva, is also blessed with spectacular natural wildlife.
Dress for Success
You can’t beat Sanibel Island for the perfectly relaxing vacation. The atmosphere on Sanibel is casual, with a relaxed dress code. Men can choose to wear jackets for elegant dinners, but none of the restaurants stipulate it. Pair a nice shirt with pants or shorts and you are ready to go. The key here is casual, not sloppy. Leave the big, messy tank tops in your hotel room, and stroll down Periwinkle Way or do your grocery shopping in your bathing suit. It’s a casual look you’re going for, not comical.
Keep Comfy in Cotton: Sanibel Island’s climate is quite tropical, so be sure to dress accordingly. Leave your polyester at home and pack your comfy cotton shorts, pants, tops and dresses. Cotton is the best choice for staying cool and truly enjoying your Sanibel Island vacation.
Sunblock: The combination of sun and sand almost guarantees sunburn for exposed skin. Even on cloudy days, or under a sunshade, you must cover up with a good SPF sunscreen or sunblock. Long-sleeved shirts are also suggested for additional protection from the sun, particularly if you plan on taking a boat excursion. If you plan on visiting in autumn, you’ll also want to pack a windbreaker or light sweater to cover up while at sea.
Simple Accessories: Leave your fancy shoes and accessories at home. On Sanibel Island, sandals are the footwear of choice for locals and visitors alike. You can also buy flip-flops and sandals at most local shops. Be sure to pack a wide-rimmed hat, cap or visor to shield your eyes and keep a cool head.
Speaking of eyes, you must bring polarized sunglasses. This can make or break your entire Sanibel Island vacation. There is so much to see, that you don’t want to risk missing anything because you’re too busy squinting against the sun. Water activities, sightseeing, shelling and fishing are all much more fun when you can comfortably see. Again, you can always pick up a pair of sunglasses at a local shop if you forget yours at home.
Sanibel Shelling
A favorite vacation activity of adults and kids is searching for seashells along the gorgeous Sanibel Island coastline. If you plan on doing a little shelling on Sanibel, remember that beautiful shells don’t always wash up to shore. To find some real tropical treasures, go out in low tide in knee-deep water. Walk slowly, and carry a bag for your treasures.
There is an important rule to follow while shelling on Sanibel Island. Do not, ever, take a living creature from the ocean. Live sand dollars, starfish, shells and sea urchins must be left in their natural habitat. Removing living sea creatures is illegal on Sanibel Island, and perpetrators face stiff fines. Be sure that every shell is empty before putting it into your bag. Just take what you need and leave the rest; nature’s supply of shells may not always be enough for the tourist demand.
It takes relatively little planning, light packing and virtually no effort to plan the perfect Sanibel Island vacation. Just being there is enough to call it the vacation of your dreams.
