Summer Sun-Smart Tips – How To Look Good And Stay Safe In The Sun

By Natalie Peach

Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

In summer, there is a common misconception that staying protected from harsh UV rays means compromising fun and style. With the ozone layer thinning at an alarming rate, especially in the southern hemisphere, skin cancer is something that cannot be ignored. Luckily there are many styles this season which offer fashionable looks whilst abiding by the sun-smart code. For those who are not familiar with sun-smart education, the are four main tips are: Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap.

Slip – on a shirt

With the thermostat rising, it is understandable that no one wants to cover up. Why torture yourself by not allowing the skin to breathe? For women, bikinis are always an easy spot on the beach despite being easy sunburn targets. Staying in the shade under an umbrella for example is often a solution to protect the body from UV light. Covering the the body by slipping on a loose shirt or dress will not deprive the skin from air or style either. This season has seen a trend in the casual-cool, making it easier to cover up without looking oddly placed. The iconic boho look, is also a fool-proof style, which can be followed especially on the beach.

Slop – on some sunscreen

It is all about looking after your biggest organ, the skin. A tan gives the perception of a healthy glow but overdoing it can come at a cost, which in some cases may not be picked up till later on in life. Using oils before sunbathing is the equivalent of rubbing oil on a roast chicken. Specialists have preached till blue in the face that UV rays from the sun cause skin cancer. A good tip is to always reapply sunscreen during the day. Baby sun lotion is a good alternative for sensitive skin, especially as they tend to have a higher SPF grade. If the skin is feeling hot or burnt after sun exposure, aloe vera lotion and moisturiser help to relieve and reduce skin peeling.

Slap – on a hat

The hat industry has seen a boom over the past few years, with many classic styles being revived. Thankfully the humble hat has made it onto the ‘want’ list for many this summer. Caps have been a popular style amongst men for many seasons, although greater coverage is better. Wide brimmed styles seen decades ago have made a return, providing full protection and coverage, not to mention adding a bit of Hollywood glamour to your life.

Wrap – on some sunglasses

With the sun also having the ability to damage the eyes, the need to protect them with sunglasses is also very important when staying sun-smart. It is also another important accessory if you want to add a bit of cool mysteriousness to your look. The wayfarer is still a classic choice if you happen to have lost your old pair over the winter months, tee shades too have also made a comeback. Whatever it happens to be, there are many choices and frames to choose from that can be found at reasonable prices.

The shirt, sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are simple accessories which can help to avoid the risk of skin cancer. As global warming and the thinning ozone layer is becoming a more concerning issue in society, the fact that summer styles have adapted to the sun-smart philosophy, is a sensible choice as the pink prawn look, does not sound very appealing.
