Lately there was a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark that was intended to debate a resolution that had to be made to fight the results of greenhouse gasses and global warming. 192 countries came together to try and provide an answer to the problem and it was quite the event. Are you able to imagine the effort and will-power of having 192 nations all together attempting to come up with a plan that needs spending billions of greenbacks and trying hard to get everyone to agree on the best way to spend it?

Go green with retread tires.

There had been one point during the summit where some of the developing nations all around the globe walked out of the negotiations because they felt that their interests were not being addressed as much as the larger, more developed states. They eventually came back to the table however it definitely made things more difficult to get an agreement.

Global warming activists from every part of the world also converged on Copenhagen in the summit and they objected and called for action every day of the conference. Many of them were held for being a little too in your face and there were plenty of scuffles with the police through the length of the event. Many people feel really dedicated to the subject of global warming and that’s understandable.

Global warming threatens our existence on this planet if you recognize all the challenges that it presents to us. When you couple that with world leaders who are averse to change, it becomes understandable that folk who feel deeply about this will do everything that they can to try and insure that progress is made.

Most of those people were searching for a legally enforceable agreement to come out of this conference, but that wasn’t accomplished. Sadly consensus couldn’t be reached between all of the nations. The US did put forth what became known as the Copenhagen Accord that looks like it should be the centerpiece of the process going forward.

Some leaders hailed this as a good start, while some of the others are calling it a “toothless failure.” The deal was primarily worked out between the US, China, and a handful of other larger more developed states. President Barak Obama made an appearance at the meeting, but that was about it. He came in and worked with some of the other nations and had a resolution drafted. That was just about it. Then the summit agreed to recognise the deal, but there wasn’t a vote or anything close to a contractually binding agreement.

It’s unfortunate to see that when we have got some real problems that we are facing in the world that could affect the existence of humans on this planet in the not-too-distant future and statesmen seem to be busy playing mind games and trying to score points over other states. The way this conference worked, the most important and most powerful nations in the world came in and imposed their will on the rest of the world and then walked out. This sort of behaviour isn’t going to clear up any of the problems on the planet. We can’t talk our way out of the situation that we have with planetary warming.
