Preventing Trip And Fall Incidents In The Workplace
Trip and fall prevention in the workplace is extremely important. There are many people who are hurt every year while going about their regular activities. These persons lose time that they would have spent earning. Some become disabled for life. Employers have to find replacements for them. Insurance companies have to compensate them for the damage they sustained.
Some accidents are the result of ordinary environmental hazards. Others are due to negligence. It is important to reduce the prevalence of trips and falls around the workplace as much as possible. Whether they occur in health care facilities, government organizations or gas stations, there are usually common causes.
These episodes may be brought about by naturally occurring perils such as sleet. Weather conditions make it dangerous to work at times. Ice, rain and flood water can be carried into an office by extraneous forces. They are hard to manage for this reason. Generally, the measures taken to control their effect must be implemented when buildings are first constructed. In this way, they can stand up to tornadoes, typhoons and floods. Proper preparation and efficient early warning systems save lives and reduce the trauma of natural phenomena.
Spills must be reported quickly. This reduces the likelihood that workers will lose their footing. When floors cannot be cleaned immediately, liquids should be covered by absorbent fabrics or paper towels. Oil and soap are very slippery and care should be taken in rooms where these substances are utilized. Spongy mats that are placed in areas where there are leaks or drips fulfill an important function. These products can also be set at water coolers and near exits. When they become saturated they should be removed.
Changes in flooring will make it risky to work in a room. Kitchens, garages and other spaces have more accidents due to lubricants and fluids on the floor. It is better to consult the occupational health and standards that apply in each industry, to get a complete understanding of what is required to improve safety.
Managers can implement various measures to stop employees from falling. Generally, floors that are wet frequently should not be covered with smooth tiles. Rougher surfaces provide a better grip. Employees should wear skid resistant footwear that helps them to maintain their footing while they work.
It is dangerous to have poor lighting in secluded areas. Dim light in stairwells increases the possibility of trips and falls. Dark parking areas put staff members at risk of being attacked by thieves. It is much more convenient for people who want to do wrong when they cannot be seen easily. Broken lights must be reported as soon as they are spotted. They should be replaced as quickly as possible. The correct wattage must be chosen so any irregularities in the floor or the environment can be detected easily.
Fixing cracked footways makes it less likely that anyone will trip and fall. These structures should be built properly from the start. Walkways must be kept free of clutter such as paper cups, bags and plastic packaging. Drawers and cabinets should be kept closed. Workers should not work too many shifts consecutively since tired employees are more likely to be injured.
