Quick Ways For Accessing Death Records

By Andy Blackwood

It is assumed that the search for death records would be easy. Due to the fact that each state carries a separate database and handles access differently, it might be quite hard. Because the Internet is so widespread, one would feel the online availability would be just as open when looking for the records of one who has passed away.

In many states, death information is stored in the vital records department along with birth record and marriage information. Some states use the local health department to handle their records, and even still, the records may be in the state’s archives. Before the Internet existed, people either visited those departments personally or called and made a request for information, so that they may send in money to pay for it through the mail.

The location of death records can vary and in some cases, might not have been filed. With the Internet being so as vast as it is, locating what one needs is easier. Online searches save time by arrowing down the field and in some cases an order can be placed once a death certificate has been found.

These records are most often used to close out an estate. If social security payments or military benefits are due to any family members, they may also need these records. Life insurance payments also require additional documentation. In some cases, families are looking to build a family tree and this information can confirm the accuracy of a relative’s life and death.

Prices that each state lists for death certificates will vary. In some states a certificate can be obtained for under ten dollars. There are then states that charge over twenty dollars to retrieve records.

Online databases are intuitive enough so that users may be led to the correct area in which to search for records. The same users will find additional information on what is needed before making a request. One state may need more information than another state.
