Why You Need A Good Radar Detector

By Charles Thomas_

If you’ve ever had the joy of riding along, radar detector online, only to be pulled over by a hidden cop, then there is some news that you might have an interest in hearing. Many of the radar detectors on the market today are not as functional as they claim. In fact, many of them absolutely do not work under real, working conditions. This is due in large part to the development of new radar guns which the police have been only too happy to put into use.

The newer radar guns use a cutting edge radar technology that is called digital signal processing, or DSP. This new technique makes new guns so fast that they are always faster than your twitch reflex of hitting the brakes. By setting them at standby and waiting for a car to come into range, a policemen can lock on and measure the speed of a vehicle in less than four tenths of a second. You don’t have to be a fortune teller to know who’s going to get a ticket in that situation.

These new radar guns are not only fast, they also have a lower power foot print. They use Ka band frequency and a very high bandwidth. This is five times higher than what was used by the earlier X band radar guns. Now you know why your radar detector is unable to spot these new radar guns.

Radar detection signals can operate in any part of the spectrum. This means that the radar detector has to scan the entire spectrum to spot the signal and this takes time. It also reduces detection range. Is it to be wondered then that the radar detectors are not as effective as you would like them to be?

Another advantage the police have in regards to their radar guns is the guns ability to detect the highest speeding vehicle within its range. This is unlike the old radar guns that had to measure each cars speed individually. So no more hiding behind a larger vehicle to avoid detection of your speed.

There is more bad news for you if you always tend to drive fast. As the old X band radar guns go out of use and are replaced by the latest model radar guns, the radar detectors will become less and less effective.

This means that you will have to do a bit of research to find the ratings available on radar detectors. The kind of detectors that you will need will depend on what your requirements are. If you use the highways often, you will need a radar detector with a high rating. On the other hand if you drive mostly within the city, you will require a detector that has an efficient filter to weed out false alarms without losing the range of detection.

Whatever detector you choose, you’re going to have to live with the fact that detectors are going to have to continue evolving to match the continually evolving threat of radar guns, and that no one detector will keep you safe now, or forever.
