1. Treats are earned, not given. It can be enticing to give a new puppy treat after treat for being so frolicsome and loving. But a puppy will reply best to treats that are earned for good behaviour, for example gnawing on chew toys instead of furniture or utilising the toilet successfully out of doors. This could teach your puppy early on that treats are a reward that can be earned thru obedience, not bad behavior.

2. Exchange toys with a treat. Your puppy should only have access to his toys at playtime. Be sure to interchange toys and treats frequently when rewarding your puppy for good behaviour. This is going to help your puppy to see you're in control of both treats and toys and he will only receive these rewards when he has obeyed.

3. Give treats while your puppy is eating. When your puppy is eating, place your hand into his food bowl to give him savory treats. This could teach your dog to accept your presence when he's eating because of the positive association of receiving extra treats. This can also make it better to control your dog since you will be established as the pack leader who provides both food and treats at explicit times.

4. Stay consistent in training not to pinch. Puppies are known to pinch and chew on different items as they explore their environment. Ensure that you and all family members teach your puppy that no nipping or biting is satisfactory; as an alternative redirect the puppy to a gnaw toy and reward to reinforce good behavior.

5. Train at the right time. Puppies are eager and willing to learn, particularly with reward-based training. But make sure that you train your puppy in a short session before mealtime so that he has sufficient energy and is hungry enough to earn treats for obedience and dog training.
