Cat or Dog, RoboPet taking over?

By James Jay

Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

We are a funny lot, cuddle and kiss a teddy Bear, care lovingly for our cars and spend hours cleaning and polishing it them only to leave it in the garage and as for the Tamagotchi Virtual Pet, parents all over were getting up day and night to make sure they were looked after or receive the wrath of their children. So why not love a RoboPet, better a Robocat coughing up a washer instead of a fur ball or a Robodog poohing ball bearings, this must be an improvement?

Sony pet robot. Sony’s Aibo, finished performing 250 movements, understood human speech, some interaction and how about your cat or dog taking photographs. Recently the autonomous robotic dinosaur the Pleo, well not a cat or dog but able to recognize sounds, sights and touch. It shows hunger, seeks affection, explores its surroundings and expresses range of emotions and is therefore more pet-like in its capability to react to sensory information and interact with its master.

There are others of course, made by electronic firms all over the world, each year improving their ability to interact with us and they have sold in there millions. But you say, mostly for the amusement of children and curious adults, they can never replace a real live pet for companionship, love and affection. That long term relationship that is built up between the pet and its master could never be reproduced into a Robopet. Well two articles that came to light recently may just change that theory.

Emotional Robot Pets Quote “Designers are engaging in a never-ending battle with consumers to provide entertaining and realistic robot pets that respond to human interaction in ever more nuanced ways, recreating real pet animals, or even peoples, behaviour”.

With current technologies in computing and electronics it is now possible to create embodied prototypes of artificial living toys acting in the physical world, repetitive behaviour in domestic robots for entertainment is no longer of interest to sophisticated users. Today, they expect their robot pets to be almost as good as the “robots” they see in 3D movies and games.

In robot design there are three problems to considered, the first is to build a control architecture to enable the robot to behave coherently, the second is develop a natural way for the robot to engage with us and the third is to install in the robots computer emotional and behaviour responses.

These issues should be overcome by developing a behaviour-based architecture — using a neural network — that would allow the robot pet owner to program the robots computer to “learn,” or evolve new behaviour and at the same time ensure that it functions in real time properly.

Research teams around the world are working on developing vision modules for robots. Although this technique is not yet fully mature they hope to build a robot pet that will know its owner’s facial expressions and hopefully respond accordingly. Developments of this kind could have major implications for interactive functional robots of the future plus other devises and computers.

Could a RoboPet be on your wish list very soon? As I have trouble with the DVD player I think our cat will be safe curled up snoring away on the chair. Personally I cannot see a RoboPet ever coming close to producing the characters of our fury friends and unpredictability which makes them unique, loveable, fun and at times downright annoying and give you the chance to experience the emotions associated with all this. However, there will be people who do not want these emotional experiences and take to these pets.

Last thoughts:- People who for health reasons cannot have pets will be able to gain experience we fortunate pet owners receive. Watch out next for RoboKids, do you think?
