By Geraldine Dimarco

If you’re taking the time to read this, I can make two fairly accurate guesses. One, you are a pet owner; and two, you are a good pet owner because you are actually taking time to look for better ways to ensure your pet’s best health. That is very commendable. Well, still your Google clicking fingers because your search is over. An excellent way to a healthy and happy pet is here-by making fantastic homemade dog treats.

You know sometimes the word “homemade” scares people when it shouldn’t. Really, it’s not intimidating at all. If you can be in the kitchen without burning yourself, you can make canine food fairly easily. There are numerous recipes for dog treats that you can find in the Internet today. In fact, you can surf the web for these right after reading the article. So, what is it we need to know about canine recipes?

Well, you need to know the ingredients that are included in the meals. Are they going to be bad for the animal? I don’t know if you know this but many food that we eat are bad for dogs. There have been reported cases wherein consuming large amounts of food common to us have resulted in critical diseases or even fatality to canines.

You must find out what these are and take the necessary steps to make sure your pet never ingests these kinds of food. Some examples of these are chocolates, caffeine, baby food, onions, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts and the seeds of fruits (cherries, apples, apricots, etc.). Throw out any recipe that contains any of these food in them.

The great thing about making your own homemade dog treats is that you can make them as fun and yummy as you want. Be as creative as you can be! Slice up pieces of liver and beef heart and boil them in garlic flavored water. Strain and feed to an eager pup. How about sprinkling cheese or putting some peanut butter on some doggie biscuits?

Even if you know you have delectable treats ready-you have to make it easy for the dogs to consume. Slice them up in small pieces that will be easier to chew. If you are cooking the meat, remove the bones beforehand. Otherwise, the bones will splinter and this may cause the animal to choke on them.

Be on the lookout for the healthier and more natural recipes for dog treats. However, just because the food is healthy doesn’t mean you can indulge the dog. Many canine sicknesses have been a result of overfeeding and a lack of nutrient intake. Besides a healthy diet, take your dog out to regular walks and exercise to maintain good health.

Remember, you have your pet’s health in your hands. You can take care of him in so many ways but the best one is always through spending quality time with him-this is more valuable to your dog than everything else combined. Enjoy his health and continue to be the best pet owner he could ever wish for.
