Maybe your puppy – like all puppies – loves to touch things you don’t want him to touch. How can you prevent him from doing so? Luckily there are ways to teach him that you expect him to refrain from touching stuff he is not supposed to touch.

A severe mistake many dog owners make is to get angry with their puppy. Don’t do that. You want to avoid making your pup become afraid of you which can easily happen if you speak to him in a loud voice. There are better ways to handle this.

Your puppy probably got used to messing with things because you were never giving your dog any boundaries or rules. What you will need to do first, is take away all the things that your dog seems to always touch, and when he starts to touch new stuff, take those things away as well.

In many cases a dog will find out then that he is not allowed to touch these things and stop messing around with things that he is not allowed to play with.

Sometimes it is not as easy. In this case you have to come up with a new command for your dog that tells him that he is not allowed to do what he does and has to stop it immediately. You can choose whatever word you like. It can be “no” or “leave it”.

What this command is all about is to teach your dog not to do something. Whenever he does something or approaches something he is not allowed to touch you give this command.

Here is how you can teach the command: As soon as he approaches something or touches something make a loud noise to get his attention and makes him look at you.

Then give him the “no”-command. But here is what you should be aware of: Do this every time your pup touches things you do not want him to touch. Then – and only then – will he learn what he is not allowed to do.

Once more: Don’t wait until he touches stuff. Give him the no command as soon as he starts thinking about it.
