Wouldn’t a Puppy Be a Great Gift?
Have you spent a lot of time looking for the perfect gift for a close friend? You know, the kind of gift that will make somebody happy for a long, long period of time, and show them how much they mean to you?
So, what do you do? You browse all kinds of online shops and wonder aimlessly through malls, not finding anything that you really like. And then you might end up thinking: Wouldn’t he/she really love a puppy? Wouldn’t that be a great gift?
A simple question, with a very simple answer: No. Let me elaborate on that: No, never, do not even think about it – do not give puppies as gifts; in fact, do not give any kind of pets, not even a goldfish.
A puppy is a tremendous responsibility, a long term commitment: Owning a dog brings huge changes to the owner’s daily schedule, plus, it also involves considerable expenses. Would you consider giving somebody a baby as a gift?
It is not much different. Think of it this way: Getting a puppy is a huge responsibility – and you can never be sure that someone wants to accept that. No matter how much they may even say they want a puppy, let them get it themselves – saying something and meaning it are not always the same thing.
Furthermore, there is a special chemistry between a dog and the owner, which many people compared to love at first sight; it’s not up to you to decide which dog is best for another person.
Also, do not attempt to give a puppy to a person who has just lost a pet – we each have different grieving periods and methods, and some may even view that as an insult.
Let me finish this article off with one exception, though: Let’s say your friend has already picked out a specific puppy and has made the arrangements. If this is the case, you might like to offer paying for it.
Granted, the gift will not be a surprise then. But it will still be a nice gesture, and it will keep you on the safe side.
