The Joy Of Jellyfish, Keeping Pet Jellyfish In Aquariums

By Kate L. Romano

Jellyfish are, without doubt, one of the most mysterious creatures which could be found either in seas or oceans. For example, did you know that people who lived 4000 years ago first noticed these amazing “fishes”? Despite that fact, we did not have any knowledge about jellyfish a few decades ago. I could prove you that by giving a simple example. Perhaps if you are above 30 years old, you remember that seeing a jellyfish in aquarium used to be extremely rare and we could see them only in the biggest public aquariums. Anyway, even they had great difficulties keeping these creatures alive due to the fact that we did not know what their normal environment should be.

Do you wonder what the reason is? Of course, the jellyfish did not evolve in a way so as to be able to live in aquariums! It would be an extremely strange direction of evolution and even if it could happen, it would take like several millions of years. So, evolution is definitely not the reason! But what is it then? Actually, the reason why we can already look after jellyfish and even buy them as a pet is the better knowledge we have about these creatures.

In the past (a couple of decades ago), we did not know what environment the jellyfish need. We even did not know how and what they eat, how they live, how they “give birth” etc. But now, things seem to have changed a lot! Probably, a lot of hard work has been done so that we learn so much about these marine creatures for such a short period of time. We already know everything we need about the jellyfish and they are even getting a very popular kind of pet!

If you think this article is interesting, you should wait until the next fact! And here it comes: according to a survey, jellyfish are the new hit pets on the market. Yes, you read correctly “hit pets on the market”. Obviously, there is also a trend about having a pet which is followed by many people. Forget about the snakes which are so expensive to look after (mice are not cheap food)! Furthermore, having a snake in an aquarium is not fashionable any more! Just get the reptile out, fill the aquarium with water and let a jellyfish settle down in its new home. Of course, this is a joke! You should know that you should equip an aquarium with special stuff (such as special light, plants, temperature regulator etc).

The conclusion is that if you like to experiment, you should not think twice before going to the pet-shop and purchasing a couple of these wonderful maritime creatures. But if you like to think every next step through, you might need some more time to decide. However, I will try to help you by saying that looking after pets like jellyfishes is much cheaper than you probably need. All you need to do is give them food and keep the levels of oxygen favorable. And the best thing is that it is exactly as easy as it sounds! There is really nothing you have to worry about. Furthermore, you can always return the pets if you think that you cannot handle with such a “responsible task”. However, I am sure you won’t want to do it since looking after a jellyfish will not take more than 10 minutes of your day!
