A dog that understands to come upon command, will enjoy more freedom than those dogs that are untrained. These trained dogs can go to the park, or even walk around the neighborhood off leash, and you will not have to worry about them running away.

Training your dog to come is not always that easy. Certain breeds are more naturally inclined to come upon command, because those are the insecure breeds that do not want to stray far from the family. Some dog breeds are just motivated to come upon command. Either way, most dogs will need to be trained to come upon command.

Let’s be honest, every dog will not be 100% reliable at coming when you call them. Dogs are like us, they have good days and bad days, or will not hear every command, and there are those distractions that our canines love so much. What we want to get across in our training your dog to come, is to get your dog to understand what you request of them and build strong habits of doing what you want upon command.

To start this important in our series of free basic dog training tips, get yourself some dog treats. If your dog has not discovered that you have those treats go and find them so you can start their training. Tell your dog to sit, and your dog should know this command already, because any more training lessons will always start with the sit command. Next give them the stay command and slowly start backing up. If they start to come then tell them in a stern voice NO, and start over by having them sit and start backing up again.

Once your canine learns to stay and you have already backed up a few steps, just tow or three steps back to start, call out your dog’s name followed by the come command. When your dog comes then give them a treat right away.
