Hermit crabs are a type of crustacean that does not have a hard shell of its own. The main part of its body is long, soft, and spiraled. They use the empty shells of other creatures, like whelks or sea snails, to protect themselves. They can be kept as pets but there is a lot of hermit crab info you should know before you decide to make a purchase.

They come in a fascinating variety of patterns and colors. Spotty, striped, purple, brown, and red varieties are available. In the wild they live in large groups reaching over a hundred. Most pet sellers encourage people to purchase them in pairs or more. They have been known to live to 32 years of age and commonly reach 23 if they are well cared for.

The best home for the crabs is either a large glass tank or a plastic one. The tanks need to be well humidified, ventilated, and heated. They prefer the humidity to be somewhere between 50 and 75%. Line the bottom of their tank with washed damp (not wet) silver or river sand.

Their most common cause of death in captivity is that their habitats are too dry. To avoid this make sure you mist the tank with a spray bottle every night.

The crabs are very easy to feed as they are naturally omnivorous scavengers. You can feed them small pieces of meat, fruit, vegetable, or even popcorn either as their main diet or as a treat. Commercial pet food specifically designed to cover all their dietary needs is also available. They often need calcium supplements which come in a powder form or alternatively you could buy a cuttlefish bone designed for bird cages.

This hermit crab info can help you make your pet crabs happier and healthier. When cared for correctly these animals will make ideal pets. If you want more information before you buy them, contact your local pet store.
