How to know you are ready to buy a horse
By Leon Palmer
Before letting your head turn at the ad in the paper saying “horse for sale” or hearing about some good horses for sale from a breeder somewhere, you will have wanted to spend time preparing and educating yourself about horses as well as working out if you are able to not just afford one, but keep and maintain one, and make the time to enjoy one.
If you have not had riding lessons, now is the time to have them. Riding lessons can be offered in a group setting or one to one. They are the best way to not only learn to ride but to learn about horses themselves. They also familiarize you with the local stable or boarding house and put you in touch with other horse riders.
It also helps to go to horse shows, reading horse magazines and books, and talk to people in the horse community who are happy to help. It may help to join an internet forum for horse lovers, as opposed to trying to break into the tightly knit circle at the local horse club, but others may prefer to talk face to face, so a local horse club may be just right.
Sometimes boarding stables offer a trial ownership, where you lease a certain horse over a period of time. This can also be a good option if you are uncertain about what sort of horse you really want to invest in. It can give you great experience and a taste of what owning a horse will actually be like. Often people assume boarding a horse is the most expensive option, but horses are expensive no matter what you do. If you house them yourself you have to often build the stable, as well as provide all the feed and hay, and provide the time to take care of them. Often it all evens out and saves much time boarding your horse, provided you are near enough to actually enjoy it.
Safety is always a priority. Horses are beautiful creatures, but they can be dangerous. So it’s essential that you take advice from your riding instructor or your stable manager and don’t just go it alone. If you are cautious and carful in the learning process it will pay off with years of confidence as you enjoy your horse.
