If someone is thinking of adopting a cat, the quiet, beautiful Ragdolls are the perfect choice. They are unusually friendly and will play happily with other pets and people of any age. This American breed first came about in the 1960′s, when Ann Baker began breeding the unique kittens produced from the pairing of a female Persian Angora, and both a Burmese and Birman male. The resulting offspring had larger bodies, long, non-matting fur, and brilliant blue eyes.

Most often, these kittens are born with a completely white coats, their full colors do not become apparent until they reach two or three years of age. Typical weight is 15 to 25 pounds for neutered males and 12 to 15 pounds for a spayed female. Its sturdy body has a round face characterized by wide-set blue eyes. Their silky, long fur is much like a rabbit’s, the legs and tail covered with long plumes. They have a “point-marked” coat, that is the ears, face, tail, and legs are darker. The standard point colors are blue, red, cream, lilac, chocolate, and seal and it may appear in one of 19 patterns.

The Ragdoll is a very gentle, loves to play and will not scratch easily, making it suitable for children. Fighting is not in their nature so it’s safer to keep them indoors. This cuddly, lovable cat is known to make its body go limp in its owner’s arms, much like a rag doll toy, this is why it has the name it has.

Since this cat has a long, luxurious coat, they should be brushed at least twice weekly with a soft brush. Their fur does not tend to mat, but it still needs proper attention. It’s also recommended to clean their ears each week using a special solution designed for this purpose. Keeping their teeth clean is also important.

Once a kitten is at least one month old, it can start eating solid food. A dry kibble which has been formulated to meet the nutritional needs of young cats with the right amount of fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals is the best choice. Veterinarians can recommend a quality cat food.

Overall this breed is fairly healthy with an average life expectancy of at least twelve years. The two conditions which pose the most threat to their health are hip dysplasia and the heart disease, feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Visiting the veterinarian at least once a year for routine check-ups is important, to screen for these disorders, which can often be treated effectively with antioxidant therapy if found early enough.

The best home for a Ragdoll is one where it will receive lots of attention and love. They are known to eagerly await their master’s arrival and will also gladly sleep with them. A good belly or chin scratching makes these cats feel doted on and loved.
